In our second session, we'll assess the current financial climate for Black women, drawing on data from the Ariel Schwab Black Investor Survey. We'll unpack trends in stock and crypto investments, dissecting how Black women engage with these assets today. Addressing prevalent money and crypto myths, this session aims to reshape misconceptions and reinforce a positive financial mindset. Attendees will gain insights into the unique challenges and triumphs of Black women in modern finance, setting the stage for a conversation on future opportunities.

Concluding the series, this panel features Professor Tonya M. Evans, and esteemed authors Lynnette Khalfani-Cox and Arlan Hamilton. We'll synthesize insights from the previous sessions, offering a holistic view of the financial journey for Black women. The panel will address how we carry forward the legacies of the past, make the most of present opportunities, and strategically prepare for future financial landscapes. This empowering conversation will aim to inspire Black women to take charge of their financial destinies, equipped with knowledge and confidence.

ABOUT OUR AUTHORS

Professor Dr. Tonya M. Evans, a preeminent legal scholar and educator, stands at the forefront of digital finance, specializing in blockchain and cryptocurrency law. Her academic journey, beginning with an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and culminating in a law degree from Howard University School of Law, has laid a solid foundation for a career marked by distinction and innovation. As a fully tenured professor at Penn State Dickinson Law, and as a faculty member at the Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, Dr. Evans plays an instrumental role in bridging the gap between complex legal theories and the rapidly evolving digital financial world. Dr. Evans has been appointed to the Digital Currency Group Board of Directors, a role that highlights her influence and expertise in the digital finance industry. Her legacy is defined by her relentless pursuit of knowledge, her commitment to educating others, and her profound influence on the fields of law and digital finance.

Arlan Hamilton is an investor and the founder of Backstage Capital, established to help “underestimated founders.” The fund focuses on people of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. She is the author of Your First Million: Why You Don't Have to Be Born into a Legacy of Wealth to Leave One Behind, and It’s About Damn Time: How to Turn Being Underestimated into Your Greatest Advantage. Hamilton was recognized as one of Fortune magazine’s "40 Under 40" in 2018 and as one of the 23 most powerful LGBTQ+ people in tech by Business Insider in 2019. 

Lynnette Khalfani-Cox is a personal finance adviser, radio personality, and author providing personal finance advice on the Russ Parr Morning Show, a Washington, D.C. radio show, since 2008. Ms. Khalfani-Cox has written personal finance books for adults, co-authoring The Millionaire Kids Club, a series of four money-management books for children aged 5-12, and releasing Zero Debt: The Ultimate Guide to Financial Freedom. The book became a New York Times Best Seller. Ms. Khalfani-Cox has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and the Dr. Phil Show. In 2009, Ms. Khalfani-Cox and co-author Susan Beacham received an "Excellence in Financial Literacy Education (EIFLE) Award" from the Institute for Financial Literacy for her book, The Millionaire Kids Club. The Institute recognized the first three books in the series as "Retail Book of the Year" in the category of money-management books for children.
